Prevent Winter Diesel Gelling

HOW TO PREVENT DIESEL GELLING DURING THE WINTER

It's no doubt that you've heard both good and bad things diesel. Whether you have always been a diesel-enthusiast or have recently flipped, there's something to keep in mind about diesel fuel when winter approaches. If you live in Canada, this applies to you. If you live in Saskatchewan (a province in Canada), this DEFINITELY applies to you. You know... with -45°C and all.

SIGNS OF DIESEL GELLING

When temperatures drop, paraffin wax in diesel fuel attracts to one another, forming larger crystals and clogging fuel filters and fuel lines. Some signs of diesel gelling include:

  • Your engine won't start
  • Engine starts then dies right away
  • Fuel pressure is gone
  • Acceleration is sluggish
It's bad enough when any of these things happen, but it's even worse in the winter. It can also cost you major repairs if nothing is done to prevent or treat it.

OUR RECOMMENDATION: USE A TOP QUALITY ANTI-GEL SUCH AS POLAR MAX

One of our recommendations to prevent diesel gelling in the winter is to use a diesel anti-gel in your summer fuel. At DSG, we have an effective solution. 4+ Polar Max; a diesel anti-gel product that has been designed to adjust cloud point and pour point to suit colder conditions. If you're caught with the wrong fuel in cold weather, you can simply add 4+ Polar Max to your bulk storage tank by either splash blending or cycling through the fuel, and 4+ Polar Max will improve the cold flow properties. Add 4+ Polar Max to your diesel before the temperature drops below -4°C and it will:

  • Prevent diesel from gelling as low as -45°C
  • Stop water condensation as low as -54°C
  • Depress the pour point of diesel
  • Lower the cold filter plug point
It is important to note that this product is a preventative product, and should NOT be used in fuel that has already gelled. if your fuel is already gelled, then 4+ Diesel Melt should be used.
